About Thymol

Thymol, 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol, has a chemical formula of C₁₀H₁₄O and occurs naturally as a monoterpenoid phenol derivative of p-Cymene. White crystalline in appearance, thymol has an aromatic odor resembling the taste of thyme, and possesses antiseptic properties making it an ideal choice for pharmaceutical applications. At a pH of around 7, thymol is only slightly soluble in water; however, it is completely soluble in alcohols or other organic solvents such as hexane, toluene, and tetrachloroethylene. Due to this property, it serves as a pH indicator for laboratory applications.

• Thymol Crystal, Lab Grade, comes in white crystalline form and has been proven successful in lab studies to control mites, prevent fermentation, and growth of mold in bee colonies. In addition to this, thymol is useful in compounds that break down quickly in the environment, preventing accumulation of toxic buildup.
• Thymol, NF grade, is used as a stabilizer in pharmaceutical applications. Due to its antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal properties, the pharmaceutical industry uses it in the synthesis of medications to treat infections. NF grade chemicals are certified under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and meet the requirements outlined by the National Formulary.
• Bromothymol blue indicator is also known as bromothymol sulfone phthalein or BTB. It serves as a pH indicator during titrations and is mainly used in the laboratory to quantify the presence of carbonic acid in a liquid. When carbon dioxide (CO₂) is dissolved in a liquid, carbonic acid forms, lowering the pH of the solution. The low pH triggers a color change of the solution from blue to green or yellow, depending on the concentration.
• Thymol iodide, NF, is an iodine derivative of thymol and is generally used to treat bacterial and fungal infections. It exists as a dry powder and is often used as a substitute for iodoform in treatment of skin issues such as wounds, ulcers, or oral cavity infections.
• Thymol blue, powder, is a brown-green or red-brown crystalline powder that is often used as a pH indicator for titration methods. Thymol blue has two protons that can dissociate which results in two pKa values. Additionally, it is only mildly soluble in water but is miscible in alcohols and alkaline solutions. This property makes it ideal as an indicator.
