Description

Ammonium sulfate is produced by reacting Sulfuric acid with two equivalents of Ammonia. It is an inorganic sulfate salt and a naturally hygroscopic compound having the chemical formula (NH4)2SO4. It contains 21% nitrogen along with 24% Sulfur, which makes it a suitable fertilizer for alkaline soils. At room temperature, it appears as a colorless solid having high solubility in water. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared Ammonium Sulfate as a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) chemical that is suitable as a food additive, and used as an acidity regulator in flours/bread. Chemically pure or Laboratory reagents are two terms used to describe Lab Grade chemicals. Lab Grade chemicals do not meet any accepted quality or purityrequirements such as the ACS Grade, the USP Grade, and the FCC Grade, despite their acceptable purity. In the United States of America (USA), Lab Alley is selling its high-quality Ammonium Sulfate, Lab Grade, online at laballey.com. Due to its high level of purity, this product is suitable for labs and commercial applications.

Questions & Answers

  • I am looking for Ammonium Sulfate that has a yellowish color and has a rotten egg smell. I have perched some from another company but what I received was colorless and had no odor to it. Do you have the one I am looking for?

Ammonium Sulfate is colorless at room temperature. Ammonium Sulfide has yellowish color and rotten egg smell.
In Ammonium sulfate the yellowish color is due to reaction of  S2O32 with concentrated sulfuric acid to form sulfur impurity.
Colorless ammonium sulfate is more pure.
