Description

Nitric Acid, also known as Aqua Fortis, Engraver’s Acid, Azotic Acid, and Hydrogen Nitrate has the chemical formula HNO3. It appears as a transparent, pale yellow to red-brown liquid, releasing reddish- brown fumes, with a characteristic choking odor. It is soluble in Water but highly toxic on inhalation. Short- term exposure to high concentrations and prolonged exposure to low concentrations are hazardous and may result in adverse health effects. Nitric acid, also known as aqua fortis and spirit of niter, is a highly corrosive mineral acid. The pure compound is colorless, but older samples tend to acquire a yellow cast due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water. Most commercially available nitric acid has a concentration of 68% in water.
