It is a corrosive chemical that is toxic by ingestion. Concentrations of hydrogen peroxide over 6% can be considered hazardous and are normally accompanied by a Safety data sheet (SDS).

Solutions of more than 8%, such as 10%, 27%, 30%, 32%, 34%, 35%, 50% and 90% are corrosive to the skin and can cause burns. Solutions containing more than 8% hydrogen peroxide are classified by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) as an oxidizer. Hydrogen peroxide solutions greater than 10% are not normally used in households in the USA.

Hydrogen peroxide diluted solutions (30% wt in water) are used in laboratories in the USA as a powerful oxidant and reducing agent. It is stored in a refrigerator and should be handled nitrile gloves, safety goggles and a labcoat.

Although 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide is sometimes used as an alternative therapy for certain medical conditions, it is poisonous and is not recommended as a treatment for allergies, emphysema, arthritis, cancer or diabetes even if it is diluted.

Some people claim that hydrogen peroxide can help cure cancer. These claims derive from the fact that hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing liquid, which means it gives off oxygen. Low oxygen levels can cause cancer, and some people think that exposing cancer cells to high levels of oxygen will prevent them from growing and they will die. This type of therapy is often known as oxy medicine, oxidology, or oxidative therapy. No current research suggests hydrogen peroxide has any effect on cancer cells. There are, however, many warnings against using it internally.

High-strength hydrogen peroxide has been falsely touted to treat AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses, but it has no approved medical uses, says the FDA. In fact, high-strength hydrogen peroxide may kill or cause serious harm if ingested, even if it is labeled "food-grade," according to the FDA.

Because 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide can burn the skin, it must be stored and handled very carefully. Although 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide is used for food processing and packaging because it does not contain stabilizers, it is extremely dangerous to use internally even if it is substantially diluted.

The American Cancer Society states that "there is no scientific evidence that hydrogen peroxide is a safe, effective or useful cancer treatment. The FDA has warned consumers in the U.S. that consuming 35 percent food-grade hydrogen peroxide for medicinal use may cause serious health consequences and death.
