About Dichloromethane (Methylene Chloride) 99.5% ACS Reagent Grade

Dichloromethane is one of four chlorocarbons that are produced by chlorinating methane. The others that result during this process are chloromethane, trichloromethane (chloroform) and tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride). Dichloromethane is the least toxic of the carbons produced during this process, but it still poses a health risk as it is a highly volatile liquid. The volatility is one of its key properties allowing it to be easily removed as a solvent.

The ACS Reagent Grade Dichloromethane (Methylene Chloride) is generally acceptable for use in most chemical analytical applications and research laboratories. Lab Alley’s premium quality Dichloromethane Reagent Grade is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and is highly recommended for getting consistent and repetitive results in research/biochemical labs.

Common Uses and Applications

  • Solvent: One of the primary uses of dichloromethane is as a solvent. It has excellent solvency power for a wide range of organic substances, including resins, oils, waxes, and many other organic compounds. It is commonly used in chemical laboratories and industries for extracting and purifying compounds, as well as in paint and varnish removers.

  • Paint Stripping: Dichloromethane is a key component in paint and varnish removers due to its ability to dissolve various types of paints and coatings effectively. However, its use in paint strippers has raised safety concerns, and regulations have been put in place to limit its use in consumer products.

  • Adhesives: Dichloromethane is used in the manufacturing of adhesives, especially those used in bonding plastics. It helps dissolve and blend different components to create adhesive formulations with specific properties.

  • Pharmaceuticals: In the pharmaceutical industry, dichloromethane is used as a solvent for various processes, including extraction, purification, and crystallization of certain pharmaceutical compounds.

  • Aerosol Propellant: Dichloromethane has been used as a propellant in aerosol products like insecticides and spray paints. However, its use as a propellant has reduced due to environmental and health concerns.

  • Chemical Manufacturing: Dichloromethane is utilized in the production of various chemicals and products, including foams, plastics, and pharmaceutical intermediates.

  • Extraction and Decaffeination: It is used in the decaffeination process of coffee and tea, where it helps extract caffeine from the raw materials.

  • Refrigerant: In some applications, dichloromethane has been used as a refrigerant, but its use in this context has also been phased out due to environmental considerations.
