Naphthalene is a white, volatile, solid polycyclic hydrocarbon with a strong mothball odor. Naphthalene is obtained from either coal tar or petroleum distillation and is primarily used to manufacture phthalic anhydride, but is also used in moth repellents.

Naphthalene is used to make mothballs, PVC, insecticides (insect killing chemicals), dyes, toilet deodorant blocks, and phthalic anhydride. The latter, among many other things, is used to make pharmaceutical and resins. Naphthalene is flammable and potentially explosive.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that naphthalene is possibly carcinogenic to humans. The U.S. EPA classified naphthalene as a possible human carcinogen, also based on animal studies.

Naphthalene is a colorless, crystalline, solid aromatic hydrocarbon with a pungent odor. It melts at 80°C, boils at 218°C, and sublimes upon heating.

Naphthalene Chemical Properties: Naphthalene purchased from Lab Alley is used as an analytical reagent.  In electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions, naphthalene reacts more readily than benzene.  Naphthalene can also be easily alkylated by reaction with alkenes or alcohols, using sulfuric or phosphoric acid catalysts.  With alkali metals, naphthalene forms the dark blue-green radical anion salts such as sodium naphthalenide. The naphthalenide salts are strong reducing agents.

Naphthalene Solubility: It is insoluble in water, somewhat soluble in ethanol, soluble in benzene, and very soluble in ether, chloroform, or carbon disulfide.
