Overview Of Sodium Metal

These are a crystalline form of alkali metal (calcium or sodium) alumina-silicates, very similar to natural clays. Read more here.

Sodium Metal In Water

Sodium metal reacts rapidly with water to form a colourless basic solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2). The reaction continues even when the solution becomes basic. The resulting solution is basic because of the dissolved hydroxide. Read more here.

Sodium Metal Production

Sodium (Na) metal is produced at the electrolytic cell cathode, and steam (H2O(g)), oxygen (O2(g)) gas and some chlorine (Cl2(g)) gas are produced at the cell anode, the latter resulting from electrolysis of the NaCl in sea salt. Read more here.

What Is Sodium Metal Used For?

Metallic Sodium: In metallic form, sodium can be used to refine reactive metals such as zirconium and potassium, improve alloy structures, descale metal and purify molten metals. It is often used as a desiccant for drying solvents in chemistry and is also used as a reducing agent in organic synthesis. Read more here.

How To Make Sodium Metal By Electrolysis

The Castner process is a process for manufacturing sodium metal by electrolysis of molten sodium hydroxide at approximately 330 °C. Below that temperature, the melt would solidify; above that temperature, the molten sodium would start to dissolve in the melt. Read more here.

Is Sodium Metal Dangerous?

So it is a combustible solid and can lead to eye burns.  In some severe cases, sodium metal has also caused digestive tract and respiratory tract burns. Some symptoms are cough, sore throat, shortness of breath and delayed lung oedema. So without a doubt, Na is corrosive and highly water-reactive. Read more here.

Information On Sodium From Wikipedia

Sodium is a chemical element with the symbol Na and atomic number 11. It is a soft, silvery-white, highly reactive metal. Sodium is an alkali metal, being in group 1 of the periodic table, because it has a single electron in its outer shell, which it readily donates, creating a positively charged ion—the Na⁺ cation.
