Ammonium Hydroxide, NH4OH, is formed when ammonia (NH3) is dissolved in water. Ammonia deprotonates a small portion of water molecules leaving the free hydroxide ion, [OH]-, to form a slightly basic solution. The resulting solution is clear, colorless, with a pungent odor and vapors that may irritate the eyes.
The Baume Scale is commonly used to determine a solution's specific gravity. It comprises of two hydrometers, one of them measures the density of liquids heavier than water and other measures the density of liquids lighter than water. The Baumé scale's unit is referred to as degrees Baume, B°, Be°, and simply Baume. Ammonium Hydroxide used commercially is often considered in terms of specific gravity and 20B° or 26B° are commonly used degrees.
