About Lugol's Iodine

Lugol's Iodine, also known as aqueous iodine and strong iodine solution, is a solution of potassium iodide with iodine in water. Iodine products and Lugol's Iodine are sold online at LabAlley.com. Cleaning with iodine may stop the spread of virusesJean Guillaume Auguste Lugol (18 August 1786 – 16 September 1851) was a French physician. Lugol's iodine (Lugol's Solution) is successfully used to treat thyrotoxicosis. Lugol's iodine solution is used in Schiller's test in order to diagnose cervical cancer. It has been know for a long time that iodine kills viruses. Povidone iodine has been used in hospitals under the brand name Betadine. BETADINE® is used for upper respiratory tract infection care.

It is a medication and disinfectant used for a number of purposes. The solution is composed of iodine and potassium iodide, which can be used as a reagent and antiseptic, with potential use in cancer diagnosis. The iodine in Lugol's solution selectively binds to alpha-1,4 glucans found in polysaccharides, such as glycogen. Iodine has several effects on thyroid function. In hyperthyroid patients, iodine acutely inhibits hormonal secretion, but the responsible mechanisms are uncertain. This is the most acute effect of iodine on thyroid status, occurring within hours of the start of therapy.

Tincture Of Iodine

Tincture of iodine, iodine tincture, or weak iodine solution is an antiseptic. Tincture of iodine is sold online at LabAlley.com. It is usually 2–7% elemental iodine, along with potassium iodide or sodium iodide, dissolved in a mixture of ethanol and water. Tincture solutions are characterized by the presence of alcohol. Read more here.

Uses Of Lugol's Iodine And Lugol's Solution

Inactivation Of Influenza Virus By Mild Antiseptics

A number of antiseptics were tested for their inactivating effect upon the virus of influenza during a brief period of exposure. This was accomplished by preparing mixtures of the antiseptics and virus, allowing them to remain in contact for 3 minutes, diluting the mixtures to the point where they would not be toxic for chick embryos and then injecting the material into embryonated eggs. Survival of the embryos indicated inactivation of the virus. The following preparations were found to inactivate the virus in 3 minutes or less: phenol, 3 per cent; tincture of iodine, U.S.P. XII, 0.1 per cent; Lugol's solution, U.S.P. XII, 1 per cent; mercuric chloride, 1:1000; potassium permanganate, 1:1000; copper sulfate, 1 per cent; propylene glycol, 90 per cent; liquor antisepticus, N.F. VII, 80 per cent. Read more here.

Lugol's Solution Mechanism Of Action

Iodine And Iodine-Containing Compounds: Inorganic iodine given in pharmacologic doses (as Lugol's solution or as saturated solution of potassium iodide [SSKI]) decreases its own transport into the thyroid, inhibits iodine organification (the Wolff-Chaikoff effect), and blocks the release of T4 and T3. Read more here.

Iodine: The Forgotten Mineral

As far as minerals go, few have as much recent research devoted to them as  iodine. Once a staple in every physician's bag, after the introduction of pharmaceutical drugs this germ-busting substance was largely forgotten. Its ability to destroy bacteria, viruses and other pathogens has been known since at least the early 1800s when French physician Jean Lugol combined iodine with potassium iodide (the stable salt of iodine) and water to create a solution he used successfully for nearly any infectious disease. This formula became known as "Lugol's solution" and was adopted by physicians throughout Europe and the Americas and was widely used until the 1920s. According to Dr. Guy Abraham, former professor of endocrinology at the UCLA School of Medicine, who has conducted iodine research for decades, this solution provides a total of 12.5 milligrams, which is exactly the "optimal dose" he recommends. The antimicrobial (germ-killing) aspects of iodine are far from its only benefits, as we will explore. Read more here.

Lugol's Solution For Cats

Iodine solutions, such as saturated potassium iodide solutions (SSKI) or potassium iodide-iodine (Lugol's solution), were used extensively in the 19th century as treatment for human endemic goiter. In the 1920s and 1930s, iodine solution were thought to be useful both as adjunct and sole therapy for  hyperthyroidism. Today, iodine continues to be used, but it has only a minor role in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, both in human patients and cats. Read more here.

Iodine To Prevent Cancer

Iodine concentrates in and is vital for the functioning of the breasts, prostate, ovaries, and testes as well as the thyroid. Different tissues concentrate different forms of iodine. For example, the breasts and prostate concentrate iodine, and the thyroid and skin concentrate iodide. Other tissues can use either form. Scientific tests using estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells exposed to iodine have shown that they are less likely to grow and spread. Iodine seems to make breast cells less sensitive to estrogen; it helps the body to metabolize various dangerous and carcinogenic forms of the hormone into estriol, a neutral or even "anti-carcinogenic" form. It is this hormone balancing action which helps prevent prostate cancer in men. Iodine supplementation also has been shown to reduce pain and swelling in fibrocystic breast disease. It is important to mention that experts disagree with what is a safe or recommended dose of iodine. In Japan, for example, the diet provides about 12 mg of iodine per day. This is 50 times more than the average American intake. It is interesting to note however that Japanese women have much lower rates of breast cancer and thyroid problems. One thing many experts agree upon is to consume multiple forms, so there are many combinations of iodide/iodine available, and these products supply much greater amounts than a kelp tablet, for example, which provides roughly 225 mcg. Read more here.

Lugol’s Solution And Other Iodide Preparations: Perspectives And Research Directions In Graves’ Disease

Lugol’s solution (LS) was developed 1829 by the French physician Jean Guillaume August Lugol, initially as a cure for tuberculosis. It is a solution of elemental iodine (5%) and potassium iodide (KI, 10%) together with distilled water. It has been used as a disinfectant, a reagent for starch detection in organic compounds, in histologic preparations, in dental procedures and in diagnosis of cervical cell alterations, the Schiller´s test. Already in the 1920s LS was given as a pre-treatment to thyroid surgery. By that time LS became the standard pre-operative treatment in patients with Graves’ disease (GD).

LS has been advocated for almost 100 years in the treatment of GD. It has effects in decreasing thyroid hormones, and possibly in reducing blood flow during thyroidectomy. LS is used both in combination with antithyroid drugs preoperatively in planned thyroidectomies in certain centers routinely, and alone as a rescue therapy if severe side effects to antithyroid drugs have occurred. These effects, especially on the vasculature have to explored further, together with investigations on how common there is an escape from LS-blocking, the mechanisms of action, which doses that should be applied, and registration of side effects. Read more here.

Lugol's Solution Dosage

Optimum Levels Of Iodine For Greatest Mental And Physical Health | Beginning in 1975, these Canadian investigators tested various amounts of various forms of I in three open trials. Lugol 5% solution was used in 233 patients for 2 years in daily amounts ranging from 31 to 62 mg I. They achieved clinical improvement in 70% of the patients. In the 19th Edition of Remington’s Science and Practice of Pharmacy, published in 1995, the recommended daily oral intake of Lugol 5% solution for I supplementation was between 0.1 and 0.3 ml. This time-tested Lugol solution has been available since 1829, when it was introduced by French physician Jean Lugol. The 5% Lugol solution contains 50 mg iodine and 100 mg potassium iodide per ml, with a total of 125 mg I/ml. The suggested daily amount of 0.1 ml is equivalent to 12.5 mg of I, with 5 mg iodine and 7.5 mg of iodide as the potassium salt.

About Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol

Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol (18 August 1786 – 16 September 1851) was a French physician. Lugol was born in Montauban. He studied medicine in Paris and graduated MD in 1812. In 1819 he was appointed acting physician at the Hôpital Saint-Louis a post he held until he retired. Lugol was interested in tuberculosis and presented a paper to the Royal Academy of Science in Paris in which he advocated the use of fresh air, exercise, cold bathing and drugs. He also published four books on scrofulous diseases and their treatment (1829, 1830, 1831, 1834). Members of the Royal Academy visited Lugol's hospital and, observing an improvement in his patients over the course of sixteen months, endorsed his treatment. He suggested that his iodine solution could be used to treat tuberculosis. This assertion attracted much attention at the time. Although not efficacious in treating tuberculosis, Lugol's iodine was successfully used to treat thyrotoxicosis by Plummer.  Lugol's iodine solution is also used in Schiller's test in order to diagnose cervical cancer. Read more here.

Lugol's Iodine For Breast Health

Iodine Alters Gene Expression in the MCF7 Breast Cancer Cell Line: Evidence for an Anti-Estrogen Effect of Iodine

The protective effects of iodine on breast cancer have been postulated from epidemiologic evidence and described in animal models. The molecular mechanisms responsible have not been identified but laboratory evidence suggests that iodine may inhibit cancer promotion through modulation of the estrogen pathway. To elucidate the role of iodine in breast cancer, the effect of Lugol's iodine solution (5% I2, 10% KI) on gene expression was analyzed in the estrogen responsive MCF-7 breast cancer cell line.

Finally, this data further supports the need for clinical studies involving the use of iodine/iodide in conjunction with current estrogen modulation therapies. Despite the efficacy of current treatments of breast cancer with medications such as Tamoxifen, the development of resistant cancers remains critically important. It has been found that CCND1 over-expression plays an important role in the development of Tamoxifen resistant breast cancer 25, 47-49; our data shows that iodine/iodide treatment can decrease mRNA levels of CCND1. This provides two potential mechanisms by which iodine/iodide could enhance the efficacy of Tamoxifen therapy: 1) having an additive effect on estrogen inhibition and 2) inhibiting the expression of CCND1 thus preventing or slowing the development of Tamoxifen resistance.

The results presented in this paper build on the substantial epidemiologic, clinical and cellular data regarding the actions of iodine in breast physiology. We suggest that the protective effects of iodine/iodide on breast disease may be in part through the inhibition or modulation of estrogen pathways. Data presented suggests that iodine/iodide may inhibit the estrogen response through 1) up-regulating proteins involved in estrogen metabolism (specifically through increasing the CYP1A1/1B1 ratio), and 2) decreasing BRCA1 inhibition thus permitting its inhibition of estrogen responsive transcription. These data open the way for further defining pathways impacted by the essential element, iodine, in the cellular physiology of extrathyroidal tissues, particularly the breast. Read more here.
