A salt forms when an acid and a base react and neutralize each other, leaving behind a positively charged ion (like sodium or potassium) paired with a negatively charged one (like chloride, sulfate or nitrate). Unlike the acids on this site, most salts are solids at room temperature, dissolve readily in water, and carry no strong acid or base hazard of their own. That said, plenty of salts here have their own hazards. Sodium hypochlorite is a strong oxidizer, ammonium nitrate is an oxidizer used in explosives when mishandled, and some salts are simply irritants. Always check the SDS rather than assuming a salt is automatically safe.
COMMON APPLICATIONS
Buffers and pH control in labs, disinfection and water treatment with sodium hypochlorite, fertilizer production from ammonium nitrate and phosphates, food preservation with sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, de-icing and brine solutions with sodium chloride, titration standards and reagents, dietary supplements from citrates and gluconates, and industrial processes like plating, dyeing and cleaning.
GRADES EXPLAINED
Lab Grade is the biggest group by far, good purity with no official monograph, for general lab and industrial use. ACS Reagent Grade meets American Chemical Society limits for analytical methods. USP and FCC Food Grade meet pharmacopeia or food standards, and that's where the Kosher and Halal certified salts sit. Reagent Grade covers prepared solutions made for specific procedures.
