About Acetone
Acetone, also called propan-2-one, propanone, or dimethyl ketone, is the simplest ketone, with the chemical formula (CH3)2CO or C3H6O and a formula weight of 58.08. It is a clear, colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with a characteristic sweetish odor, miscible with water, alcohol, and ether. Acetone ships as a DOT Class 3 flammable liquid, Packing Group II, and carries a hazmat fee like our other flammable solvents.
COMMON APPLICATIONS
Acetone is used as a solvent in chromatography and general lab work, a household and industrial degreaser for cleaning metal surfaces before painting, soldering, or welding, a nail polish remover, and a component in paint and coating removal.
GRADES EXPLAINED
Lab Grade has solid purity, around 99.5%, but is not tested to ACS or any other certified standard, so it fits general lab, industrial, and household use rather than food or drug applications. ACS Grade meets American Chemical Society reagent specifications for analytical work. Semiconductor/Electronic Grade is formulated for cleaning components where trace metal content has to stay extremely low. HPLC Grade is tested for the low UV absorbance and minimal residue chromatography instruments require. Diacetone Alcohol is a related but distinct solvent, often used where a slower evaporating, higher boiling point alternative to acetone is needed, and the Acetone IPA 50/50 blend combines both solvents in one product for applications that call for that specific mix.

Lab Grade has solid purity, around 99.5%, but is not tested against any certified standard, fine for general cleaning, degreasing, and household use. ACS Grade meets American Chemical Society reagent specifications, which is what a lot of analytical procedures call for by name.
What's the difference between acetone and diacetone alcohol?
Diacetone alcohol is a related but distinct compound, made from two acetone molecules combined, with a higher boiling point and slower evaporation rate than plain acetone. It is not just a stronger version of acetone. It behaves differently and gets chosen specifically when that slower evaporation matters, like in some paint and lacquer formulations.
Do I need a permit to buy acetone?
No. Acetone does not require a TTB permit or similar authorization. It does ship as a DOT Class 3 flammable liquid, Packing Group II, which comes with a hazmat shipping fee, but that is a shipping classification, not a purchase permit.
Is acetone Kosher or Halal certified?
No. None of our acetone products currently carry Kosher or Halal certification. If you need a certified solvent, our ethanol or isopropyl alcohol categories have certified options.
Which grade should I use for electronics cleaning versus household use?
For cleaning electronic components where trace metal content matters, Semiconductor/Electronic Grade is formulated for that low residue requirement. For household cleaning, degreasing, or nail polish removal, Lab Grade is the more economical choice and does the job just as well.
How does acetone compare to isopropyl alcohol for cleaning?
Acetone evaporates faster and is a stronger solvent for oils, resins, and adhesives, but it is also more aggressive toward some plastics and finishes than isopropyl alcohol is. If you are cleaning a surface acetone might damage, isopropyl alcohol is usually the safer choice, and our Acetone IPA 50/50 blend is a middle ground for applications that call for both.
Can I buy acetone in drums or totes?
