Cupric nitrate, also called copper (II) nitrate or copper dinitrate, is the nitrate salt of copper. The common trihydrate form, Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, is a dark blue, hygroscopic crystalline solid with no odor, and it's fully soluble in both water and alcohol. Because it's hygroscopic, it pulls moisture from the air, so containers need to stay tightly closed between uses. Heated to decomposition, it gives off toxic nitrogen oxide and copper oxide fumes, so it shouldn't be heated in an open or poorly ventilated space.
