EDTA

Buy Disodium and Tetrasodium EDTA, Free Acid and Reagent Solutions, Kosher and Halal Options Available.

Buy EDTA online in the salt form and grade your application actually needs, with the price right on the page. Reagent grade disodium EDTA solutions come premixed at 1.0M, 0.2M, 0.05M (0.1N) and 0.0575M, so titrations and water hardness testing don't require weighing out solid and dissolving it yourself. Solid forms include ACS/FCC Grade disodium EDTA, which is Kosher and Halal certified, Ultrapure Grade tetrasodium EDTA, also Kosher and Halal, the EDTA free acid in Lab and Reagent grade, and EDTA ferric sodium salt, a chelated iron source used in plant nutrition.
Every product ships with its SDS and COA posted online, and sizes run from small gram quantities up to 55 gallon drums on the reagent solutions. Grades here are Lab, Reagent, ACS/FCC and Ultrapure, built for laboratory, analytical, food and cosmetic formulation use. None of this is pharmaceutical injection grade, so if your application involves medical chelation therapy or any use inside the human body, that requires a licensed physician and pharmaceutical grade material, not the laboratory and industrial grade EDTA sold on this page.

About EDTA

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, or EDTA, is a white crystalline solid that's barely soluble in water on its own, which is exactly why it's almost always sold as a salt instead, disodium, tetrasodium or a metal complex like EDTA ferric sodium. What makes EDTA useful across so many industries is a single property: it's a hexadentate chelating agent, meaning one EDTA molecule can wrap around a metal ion and bind it at six points at once. That grip is tight enough to pull a metal ion out of solution chemistry entirely, locking it into a stable, water soluble complex that can't catalyze the reactions it otherwise would. That's the whole reason EDTA shows up in food, cosmetics, cleaning products and lab reagents: it's not doing the main job in any of them, it's quietly keeping trace metals from interfering with it.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Stabilizer in food and cosmetic products, preventing trace metal ions from triggering discoloration or oxidation. Chelating agent in detergents and cleaning products, where it keeps hard water minerals in solution. Titration reagent for measuring water hardness and metal ion concentration in analytical labs. Chelated micronutrient source in agriculture, with EDTA ferric sodium improving iron uptake in plants grown in alkaline soil. Blood collection tube additive in clinical settings, where EDTA's calcium binding prevents clotting so samples stay suitable for analysis. And, under medical supervision with pharmaceutical grade material, a chelation therapy agent for treating certain heavy metal exposures.

GRADES EXPLAINED

Reagent Grade covers the premixed molar solutions, made for titrations and specific analytical procedures with no dilution required. Lab Grade is solid everyday purity for general reagent and industrial use. ACS/FCC Grade meets both American Chemical Society and Food Chemicals Codex standards, which is why it's the grade carrying Kosher and Halal certification here, suitable for food and cosmetic formulation. Ultrapure Grade pushes purity further still, for applications where trace impurities genuinely matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy EDTA online?
Right here. We carry EDTA as disodium and tetrasodium salts, free acid, ferric sodium salt and ready mixed reagent solutions, in Lab, Reagent, ACS/FCC and Ultrapure grades. Pick the form and grade, check the price, and order with no quote needed for standard sizes. Most in stock orders ship within 1 to 2 business days.
What is EDTA actually used for?
Mostly as a chelating agent, meaning it grabs onto metal ions and locks them into a stable, soluble complex. That one trick shows up everywhere: stabilizing food and cosmetics against metal-triggered discoloration, keeping hard water minerals dissolved in detergents, delivering chelated iron to plants in agriculture, and preventing clotting in blood collection tubes for lab analysis. It's also used medically for chelation therapy, but that requires pharmaceutical grade material under a physician's care, not the reagent grade EDTA sold here.
What's the difference between disodium and tetrasodium EDTA?
Mostly pH and solubility behavior. Disodium EDTA is the more common form, widely used in food, cosmetics and lab reagents. Tetrasodium EDTA carries two more sodium ions in place of acidic hydrogens, making it more alkaline and often more soluble at a given concentration. Which one a formulation calls for usually comes down to the pH range it needs to work in, so check your specific method or recipe before substituting one for the other.
Which EDTA products are Kosher, Halal or food grade?
Two specific products, not the whole category. Our EDTA Disodium Salt, ACS/FCC Grade is both Kosher and Halal certified and meets Food Chemicals Codex standards. Our EDTA Tetrasodium Salt, Ultrapure Grade is also Kosher and Halal certified. The reagent solutions, free acid and ferric sodium salt products carry no certification, so check the specific product title before ordering for a food or religious compliant application.
Do I need a permit, and can EDTA ship to a home address?
No purchase permit is required. Like the rest of our chemical catalog, EDTA ships to business, lab and school addresses rather than residential ones. Each product page lists its specific shipping details, and Customer Care at 512-668-9918 can confirm before you order if you're unsure your address qualifies.
Which grade and form should I buy?
Depends on the job. Titrations or a method calling for a specific molarity: one of the premixed reagent solutions. General lab or industrial chelation work: Lab Grade free acid or disodium salt. Food, cosmetic or formulation work needing certification: ACS/FCC or Ultrapure Grade. Plant nutrition or correcting iron deficiency in alkaline soil: EDTA ferric sodium salt specifically, since that's the chelated iron form.
Is EDTA the same thing used in blood collection tubes?
Chemically related, yes, but not the same product. EDTA blood collection tubes use a specific, sterile, pharmaceutical grade formulation designed for clinical sample handling, not the lab and industrial grade EDTA sold on this page. Our products are intended for laboratory, analytical, agricultural and formulation use, not for direct medical or clinical sample collection applications.
Can I buy EDTA in bulk?
Yes, for several of the reagent solutions, which scale up through larger containers right on the product page. For volumes beyond what's listed, or a recurring delivery schedule, request pricing through Bulk & Custom Chemicals. Autoship takes 10% off eligible repeat orders.
How should EDTA be stored?
Keep solid EDTA tightly sealed in its original container, in a cool, dry area, since it can slowly absorb moisture from the air. Reagent solutions should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight. EDTA is generally low hazard compared to most of our reagents, but the Chemical Storage Compatibility Chart is worth a check if you're storing it alongside metal salts or oxidizers.
