About Potassium Iodide

Potassium Iodide is an ionic compound with the formula KI. It exists as a white salt with a crystalline structure that is the same as that of sodium chloride. Produced via the reaction of Iodine with Potassium Hydroxide, it is the mostly broadly used source of iodide.

Iodine is an essential mineral, used by the thyroid to produce hormones; as such, potassium iodide is used to iodize table salt and help prevent deficiency in consumers. It may also be taken as an oral dietary supplement. In medical use, potassium iodide may be used to saturate the body with stable (non-radioactive) iodide in order to prevent uptake of radioactive iodide. For example, the body may be exposed to radiopharmaceuticals for the treatment of some health conditions, or in nuclear accidents. In laboratory use, Potassium Iodide is a source of iodide in organic synthesis.
