Ethanol is a two-carbon alcohol with the formula C2H5OH. Also known simply as alcohol and as ethyl alcohol, it is completely miscible with water. In 70% Ethanol (140 Proof Ethyl Alcohol) the ethanol is in aqueous solution with up to 30% water.

The denatured grade includes methanol and isopropyl alcohol as denaturants. 70% Ethanol (140 Proof Ethyl Alcohol) can be used for most non-food sanitization applications. Lower concentration ethanol is acceptable (and often preferred) in cleaning, since its ability to function as a bactericide is maximized at 60-90% concentration. It should be noted that any surface that comes into contact with food during processing requires sanitization with a food grade reagent.
