A chloride salt is what you get when a metal or ammonium ion pairs up with a chloride ion, Cl-. Most are white, crystalline, and dissolve easily in water, which is exactly why so many of them end up as reagents, buffers or process chemicals. But don't let the family resemblance fool you into thinking they behave the same way. Sodium chloride is about as unreactive as chemistry gets. Calcium chloride pulls moisture out of the air hard enough to generate real heat when it dissolves. Ferric chloride is corrosive and stains almost anything it touches, which is exactly why it's used to etch copper. Mercuric and cupric chloride carry heavy metal toxicity that plain sodium chloride simply doesn't. So the shared name tells you less than you'd think, and the SDS is where the real differences show up.
