Carbonates

Buy Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Ammonium and Magnesium Carbonate in Lab, FCC, ACS and USP Grades

Buy carbonate salts online in the grade your process actually needs, with the price right on the page. Sodium carbonate is the big one here, also known as washing soda or soda ash, available in Lab, FCC Food and USP grade, anhydrous or monohydrate. There's also potassium, calcium, ammonium and magnesium carbonate, each covering its own mix of food, pharmaceutical, laboratory and industrial applications.

Grades run from Lab Grade for general use up to FCC Food Grade, USP Grade and ACS Reagent Grade for food, pharmaceutical and analytical applications. A good number of the food grade carbonates here, especially the sodium, potassium, calcium and ammonium products, are also Kosher and Halal certified, but that's specific to those SKUs, not the whole category, so check the product title before assuming it applies. Every product ships with its SDS and COA posted online, and sizes run from small jars up to 25 kg and 50 lb containers on select grades.

About Carbonates

A carbonate salt pairs a metal or ammonium ion with the carbonate ion, CO3 2-, a carbon atom bonded to three oxygens. Most carbonates on this page are white, odorless solids that are only mildly to moderately soluble in water, and nearly all of them are alkaline, meaning they raise pH rather than lower it, which is the exact opposite behavior of the acids in our catalog. Sodium carbonate is the one you've probably already used without realizing it: it's the same compound sold as washing soda or soda ash, a strongly alkaline cleaning agent with a pH around 11. Calcium carbonate is the main component of limestone, chalk and marble, and shows up constantly as an antacid and calcium supplement. Each carbonate behaves a little differently depending on the metal attached, so it's worth checking the specific product rather than assuming they're interchangeable.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Cleaning and laundry use with sodium carbonate, where its alkalinity boosts detergent and softens hard water. Food and beverage processing, where FCC grade carbonates adjust pH, act as a leavening agent, or supply calcium and other minerals. Pharmaceutical and supplement formulation, where USP grade carbonates serve as antacids, calcium sources, or excipients. Glass, ceramics and ceramic glaze production, which relies heavily on sodium carbonate as a flux. Water treatment and pH adjustment in industrial processes. General laboratory reagent and buffer use across all five carbonate families stocked here.

GRADES EXPLAINED

Lab Grade is solid, everyday purity with no official monograph, the practical choice for general industrial and research use. FCC Food Grade meets food chemical standards, the one to buy for food, beverage or supplement applications, and that's where most of the Kosher and Halal certified products sit. USP Grade meets pharmacopeia standards for pharmaceutical use. ACS Reagent Grade is tested to American Chemical Society limits for analytical methods where trace impurities matter.

TYPES & GRADES AT A GLANCE

Anhydrous and monohydrate forms in Lab, FCC and USP grade, also known as washing soda or soda ash.
A food grade alkaline salt used in baking and food processing.
Lab and USP/FCC grade, used as an antacid, calcium supplement and industrial filler.
A food grade leavening agent, also known as baker's ammonia.
A food and pharmaceutical grade carbonate used as an antacid and anti-caking agent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy sodium carbonate or washing soda online?
Right here. We carry sodium carbonate, also sold as washing soda or soda ash, in Lab, FCC Food and USP grades, both anhydrous and monohydrate. Pick the grade and size, check the price, and order with no quote needed for standard sizes. Most in stock orders ship within 1 to 2 business days.
Is sodium carbonate the same thing as baking soda?
No, though people mix them up constantly. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3, a mild alkaline compound. Sodium carbonate, washing soda, is Na2CO3, a stronger alkaline salt with a pH around 11 compared to baking soda's milder pH. You can actually make washing soda by heating baking soda, but the two aren't interchangeable in most cleaning or chemistry applications since sodium carbonate is noticeably more alkaline.
Lab grade vs FCC vs USP, what's actually different?
Mostly purity and where it's headed. Lab Grade is solid everyday purity with no official standard, fine for general industrial and research use. FCC Food Grade meets food chemical standards, the one to use for anything in food or beverages. USP Grade meets pharmacopeia standards, relevant for pharmaceutical and supplement formulations. If your application touches food, drugs or supplements, go with FCC or USP rather than Lab Grade.
Which carbonates are Kosher, Halal or food grade?
Specific products, not the whole category. Our Sodium Carbonate Anhydrous FCC, Potassium Carbonate FCC/Food Grade, Calcium Carbonate USP/FCC Powder, and Magnesium Carbonate USP/FCC Grade are all Kosher and Halal certified. Lab Grade and ACS Reagent Grade carbonates across all five families carry no such certification, so always check the specific product title.
Do I need a permit, and can carbonates ship to a home address?
No purchase permit is required for any carbonate salt. Like the rest of our chemical catalog, they ship to business, lab and school addresses rather than residential ones. Each product page lists its specific shipping details, and Customer Care at 512-668-9918 can confirm before you order if you're unsure your address qualifies.
Which grade should I buy?
Match it to the job. General cleaning, industrial or research use: Lab Grade. Food, beverage or supplement formulation: FCC Food Grade. Pharmaceutical applications: USP Grade. Analytical methods or trace level work: ACS Reagent Grade, where available. If you need washing soda for a cleaning application specifically, the anhydrous Lab or FCC grade sodium carbonate does the job.
What is sodium carbonate actually used for?
A wide range of things. As washing soda, it's a heavy duty cleaning agent and laundry booster that softens hard water and boosts detergent performance. In manufacturing, it's a key ingredient in glass and ceramic glaze production. In food processing, FCC grade sodium carbonate adjusts pH and acts as a raising agent in some baked goods. It also shows up as a buffer and reagent in laboratory work across chemistry and biology.
Can I buy carbonate salts in bulk?
Yes, for most of them. Several carbonates on this page scale up to 25 kg and 50 lb containers right on the product page. For volumes beyond what's listed, or a recurring delivery schedule, request pricing through Bulk & Custom Chemicals. Autoship takes 10% off eligible repeat orders.
How should carbonate salts be stored?
Keep them tightly sealed in their original containers, in a cool, dry area, since most carbonates are at least somewhat hygroscopic and can clump or convert to a hydrated form if they pick up moisture from the air. They're generally stable and low reactivity compared to most of our stock, but it's still worth keeping them away from strong acids, which will react with carbonates to release carbon dioxide gas.
