99% isopropyl alcohol is isopropanol (C3H8O) with only about 1% water left in solution. That low water content is the whole point at this concentration. It means faster evaporation and less residue on whatever surface or instrument the alcohol touches, which matters a lot more than the price difference once you are cleaning something you cannot easily replace. Like every isopropyl alcohol grade, it is colorless, volatile, and a Class IB flammable liquid with a flashpoint around 12°C (53°F), so it still needs to be stored and handled with that in mind.

GRADES EXPLAINED
Semiconductor/Electronic Grade is formulated for low particulate count and low residue, so it can go straight onto a board or a sensor without leaving anything behind. HPLC Grade is tested to the purity chromatography instruments require, since even a small contaminant can throw off a peak or damage a column. Neither grade is meant to replace the Lab, ACS, or USP Grade IPA sold at 70%, 91%, and 99.8%. They exist for electronics and analytical work specifically, not general cleaning or disinfecting.

Semiconductor Grade or HPLC Grade, how do I pick?
Pick based on what the alcohol touches. If it is a circuit board, sensor, or electronic component, go with Semiconductor/Electronic Grade, it is built to leave nothing behind. If it is feeding an HPLC, GC, or other chromatography instrument, use HPLC Grade, since that instrument's results depend on solvent purity you can trust.
Why is 99% here different from 99.8%?
The 99.8% subcategory carries Lab, ACS, and USP grades built for general solvent use, reagent work, and formulation. This 99% subcategory only carries Semiconductor and HPLC grades, both specialty products for electronics and analytical instrumentation. If you need a general purpose high proof IPA, check the 99.8% page instead.
Do I need a permit to buy this?
No. Isopropyl alcohol has never been a beverage alcohol product, so there is no TTB permit or paperwork tied to either grade.
Is 99% isopropyl alcohol Kosher or Halal certified?
No. Neither Semiconductor/Electronic Grade nor HPLC Grade carries Kosher or Halal certification. If you need a certified 99% or higher IPA, USP Grade 99.8% is the one to look at.
Can this ship to my house?
No. Like our other flammable chemicals, it only ships to a business, school, university, or lab address. Use a home address at checkout and we will pull it from your order before it ships, so use a work address to avoid the delay.
What is the actual difference in use between HPLC Grade and Semiconductor Grade?
HPLC Grade is validated for chromatography: low UV absorbance, minimal nonvolatile residue, and the consistency needed to keep a chromatogram clean. Semiconductor Grade is validated for electronics cleaning: low particulate count and metallic ion content that will not damage a board. They overlap in purity but are tested against different specs for different jobs.
How does 99% compare to 91% for cleaning electronics?
99% dries faster and leaves less water behind, which is why it is the safer choice on anything moisture sensitive. 91% still cleans electronics fine in a pinch, but the extra water means a slower dry and a slightly higher chance of residue on delicate components.
Can I buy this in bulk?
In smaller volume than some of our other IPA grades. Semiconductor and HPLC Grade both ship up to a 55 gallon drum, but larger sizes are not currently stocked at this concentration. Contact us through Bulk & Custom Chemicals to check current availability.
