How N-Butanol Is Used In Coatings Formulations:

N-Butanol is a primary alcohol, and a high purity four-carbon solvent used in ambient dry and baking coatings. Roughly half of the n-butanol produced, as well as its esters, are used in the production of coatings. Often, it is added to cellulose nitrate lacquers for its anti-blushing properties, and its ability to improve flow and gloss by reducing the viscosity of solutions. Addition rates generally range between 5-10%.

Properties:

Butanol, also known as butyl alcohol, exists in one of four molecular structures, each with the same molecular makeup (C4H10O). They are the following: n-butanol, sec-butanol, tert-butanol, and isobutanol, or isobutyl alcohol. Each chemical has distinct properties from the other chemical structure.

n-ButanolThe "n" in n-butanol stands for "normal," and is used to identify the chemical makeup of butanol that forms a continuous, linear chain. At room temperature, n-butanol is a colorless, refractive liquid, and has a distinct, alcoholic banana-like scent, that is both sweet and harsh. It is metabolized by the human body similar to ethanol, but with a rate of intoxication approximately six times higher.
n-Butanol has a boiling point of 117.7°C, and a melting point of -89.8°C. Its molar mass is 74.123 g mol-1. N-butanol's density is 0.81 g/cm3.
sec-Butanol"Sec" in "sec-butanol" stands for "secondary" (sec-butanol is also sometimes presented as "2-butanol)." This chemical formulation of butanol, like n-butanol, is a colorless liquid at room temperature that is flammable and only lethal to humans in large quantities. It has an alcoholic odor.
sec-Butanol has a varying boiling point of 98°C to 100°C, and a melting point of -115°C. Its molar mass is 74.123 g mol-1, and its density is .808 g/cm3.
tert-Butanol: Also known as "t-butanol," the prefix in either case stands for "tertiary." tert-Butanol is the simplest tertiary alcohol. At room temperature, tert-butanol actually exists in solid form. It is not acutely toxic, but little research has been done on the topic of human exposure to tert-butanol to study its exact toxicology.
tert-Butanol has a varying boiling point of 82°C to 83°C, a melting point of 25°C to 26°C, a molar mass of 74.123g mol-1, and a density of 0.775g/mL.
Isobutanol: Isobutanol, or isobutyl alcohol, has a distinct, musty, alcoholic odor, and exists as a colorless liquid at room temperature. It is the least toxic of the butanol formulations, but should be stored in well-ventilated areas, as it is highly irritating to the eyes, throat, and mucous membranes.
Isobutanol has a boiling point of 107.89°C, a melting point of -108°C, a molar mass of 74.122 g/mol, and a density of .802 g/cm3.

Buy Butanol Online:

Butanol, also known as butyl alcohol, is for sale online by Lab Alley, a bulk butanol wholesale supplier and distributor headquartered in Austin, Texas.

Uses:

n-Butanol: n-Butanol is most commonly used as a solvent for paints, resins, other commercial and industrial coatings, oils, waxes, and more, and is also seen as a functional component of hydraulic brake fluids. n-Butanol is used as a chemical intermediary for esters, such as butyl acetate, butyl ethanoate, and dibutyl phthalate. n-Butanol sees roughly 8 billion pounds of annual demand.

sec-Butanol: sec-Butanol is used less in solvents and esters than n-butanol, but still has several uses. It is often used as an extraction solvent for the production and synthesis of spices, flavorings, coloring agents, and cleaning agents.

In industry, sec-butanol is mostly oxidized into methyl ethyl ketone (2-butanone), which is a solvent used in the manufacture of plastics, fabrics, and explosives. Methyl ethyl ketone is a highly efficient and solvent for surface coatings with a wide range of applications. Other intermediary chemicals it is used to create include butyl acetate and sec-butyl acetate.

tert-Butanol: tert-Butanol is the simplest tertiary alcohol, and is used as a solvent, ethanol denaturant, paint remover ingredient, gasoline octane booster, colorant, antifreeze ingredient, and many other industrial applications.

Isobutanol: Isobutanol is often used as a substitute for n-butanol. Its most common applications are in esters and varnishes, which are common solvents. Given certain advantages isobutanol has over ethanol in the biofuel industry, experts expect the molecule to see increased use in coming years throughout the fuel, rubber, and polyethylene industries.
