Lactic acid may exist either as a white solid in pure form, or a clear to yellowish liquid when dissolved in water. It can be produced via fermentation of carbohydrates, or synthesized from acetaldehyde. Food grade is synonymous with FCC, a monogram controlled under the United States Pharmacopeia to ensure the purity and safety of chemicals for food use.
