Buy Undenatured Alcohol Online | Pure Ethanol 190–200 Proof | Lab Alley

Undenatured Ethanol

Pure, tax-paid ethyl alcohol with no denaturant — 190 to 200 proof, food, HPLC, and reagent grades in stock.

Waiting on a distributor to confirm your ethanol is actually additive-free shouldn’t be part of placing an order. When your work calls for pure, tax-paid ethanol — no denaturant, no ambiguity about what’s in the bottle — you need documentation as much as you need the chemical itself. That’s why Lab Alley makes it simple to buy undenatured alcohol online — from 200 proof pure ethanol for HPLC and molecular biology work, to 190 and 140 proof USP/FCC food grade ethanol for formulation and food-contact use. Every grade is in stock and ready to ship, so you’re not waiting on a quote to confirm what’s actually available.

Every undenatured ethanol product ships with a Safety Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis, so your compliance team has documentation before the order arrives. Because undenatured ethanol carries no denaturant, it’s subject to federal excise tax and generally costs more than denatured or SDA grades — the trade-off for a compound that’s food-, pharma-, and analytical-safe. Container sizes range from a single pint to a 55-gallon drum, so the same page covers a bench restocking a shelf and a formulation line running a batch.

Not sure which proof or grade you need? 200 proof (100%) is the highest purity available — ethanol and water form an azeotrope, so 190 proof (95%) is the practical ceiling for standard distillation, and 200 proof product has had that last trace of water removed by other means. USP/FCC food grade covers food, beverage, and pharmaceutical use; HPLC, molecular biology, histological, and reagent grades step up in purity and low-particulate control for laboratory and analytical work. For sanitization specifically, 60–80% concentrations are what actually denature viral proteins — 200 proof absolute ethanol is too dry to disinfect effectively on its own.

Below you’ll find the full product range, a quick grade comparison, guides on storage, safety, and grade selection, and the industries that rely on Lab Alley’s undenatured ethanol every day, from food and beverage to life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

About Undenatured Ethanol

Undenatured ethanol is ethanol that does not have denaturants added to deter ingestion, making it safer, but also subject to excise taxes. Undenatured ethanol does not necessarily mean food grade. Within the undenatured category, ethanol purity may still vary depending upon the application since byproducts might form during ethanol production or storage.

The most obvious impurity is water. Ethanol and water form an azeotrope, which means that no matter how many times you distill it, the maximum concentration you can achieve is 95.6% ethanol.

Ethanol is also hygroscopic, and will absorb water from the atmosphere even if it has been completely purified. Water may also be added intentionally to change the concentration of the ethanol. For example, undenatured ethanol is often used for hand sanitizer since it may come into contact with food, but 100% ethanol (called absolute ethanol) is an ineffective disinfectant.

Optimal concentration of ethanol for sanitization is between 60-80% to denature viral proteins. For ethanol dilutions, volumes are not additive, due to the intramolecular forces between ethanol and water.

About Undenatured Ethanol

Undenatured ethanol is ethyl alcohol with no additive blended in to discourage consumption — the same molecule sold as denatured or SDA grades, just without the denaturant. Its small, polar-and-nonpolar structure is what makes it useful across so many jobs: a polar –OH group behaves like water, while the short carbon chain adds nonpolar character, so it stays miscible with water while also dissolving a wide range of polar and nonpolar compounds. Water is the primary impurity at play — ethanol and water form an azeotrope that caps standard distillation at 95.6% (190 proof), which is why reaching 200 proof (100%) requires additional dehydration steps. Undenatured ethanol also readily absorbs atmospheric moisture, so containers should stay tightly sealed between uses.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Food and beverage flavor extraction and formulation, pharmaceutical solvent and processing aid, cosmetic and personal-care formulation, analytical chemistry (chromatography, sample prep), and surface disinfection at 60–80% dilution — note that 100% (200 proof) ethanol is too dry to denature viral proteins effectively and is a poor disinfectant on its own.

GRADES EXPLAINED

USP/FCC food grade (190–200 proof) is the standard for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical use. HPLC and reagent/anhydrous grades (≤ 50ppm water) meet the low-particulate, low-moisture standards analytical instruments require. Molecular biology grade is processed and tested for nucleic acid work. Histological grade suits tissue processing and staining. All are undenatured — the grade differences are about purity and testing, not about denaturant content.

TYPES & GRADES AT A GLANCE

The highest available purity; no residual water beyond trace levels, for HPLC, molecular biology, and other work where absolute purity matters.
The practical ceiling for standard distillation; food, beverage, and general lab use where 200 proof isn’t required.
Pre-diluted for disinfection and cleaning use, in the 60–80% range that’s actually effective against microorganisms.
Meets food, beverage, and pharmaceutical compendial standards; the most common grade for formulation work.
Low-particulate, chromatography-tested for analytical instrumentation.
Tested for nucleic acid and enzymatic work.
Tissue processing, dehydration, and staining applications.
(Anhydrous, ≤ 50ppm H₂O) — the lowest-moisture option, for reactions and processes sensitive to water content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy undenatured alcohol online?
Lab Alley sells undenatured ethanol online in 140, 190, and 200 proof, across USP/FCC food, HPLC, molecular biology, histological, and reagent grades, from single pints to 55-gallon drums. Every order can be placed directly on the website — no quote or sales call required — and most in-stock orders ship within 1–2 business days.
What’s the difference between undenatured and denatured ethanol?
Undenatured ethanol has no additive blended in and remains drinkable-grade pure, which is why it’s subject to federal excise tax. Denatured and SDA ethanol have a denaturant added to make them unfit to drink, which exempts them from that tax and generally makes them less expensive — but unsuitable for food, pharma, or analytical work where purity can’t be compromised.
What does 200 proof mean vs. 190 proof?
Proof is twice the alcohol percentage by volume, so 200 proof is 100% ethanol and 190 proof is 95%. Ethanol and water form an azeotrope that caps ordinary distillation at 190 proof; reaching 200 proof requires an extra dehydration step, which is part of why it costs more.
Do I need any special paperwork to buy undenatured alcohol?
Undenatured ethanol doesn’t require a TTB permit the way 5-gallon-plus purchases of Specially Denatured Alcohol do. It is subject to federal excise tax, which is reflected in its price rather than requiring separate buyer paperwork at checkout.
Which undenatured ethanol products are Kosher or Halal certified?
Several of Lab Alley’s USP/FCC food grade undenatured ethanol products carry Kosher or Halal certification. Certification varies by specific product and package size, so check each product page for which apply before ordering.
Can undenatured alcohol be shipped to a residential address?
No — like the rest of Lab Alley’s ethanol products, undenatured ethanol ships to verified businesses, schools, and laboratories only, not to residential addresses.
What grade should I use for food and beverage work vs. lab analysis?
USP/FCC food grade is built for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical formulation. For lab analysis, step up to HPLC grade for chromatography, molecular biology grade for nucleic acid work, or reagent grade when you need the lowest possible water content.
How is undenatured ethanol different from isopropyl alcohol for cleaning and disinfection?
Both work as disinfectants in the 60–80% dilution range, but undenatured ethanol is the only one of the two that’s also approved for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical use — isopropyl alcohol is not food-safe. Ethanol also tends to be gentler on some surfaces and finishes.
Can I buy undenatured alcohol in drums or larger quantities?
Yes — Lab Alley stocks undenatured ethanol up to 55-gallon drums, with larger tote and bulk sizes available through Bulk & Custom Chemicals for production-scale orders.
