Triethanolamine (TEA), commonly known as Trolamine, is a tertiary amine and a triol. It is a bifunctional molecule that can serve as both an alcohol and an amine. Trolamine contains trace amounts of diethanolamine and ethanolamine, and it may act as an antioxidant to prevent auto- oxidation of animal and vegetable lipids. It is commonly used as a pH adjuster and surfactant in industrial and cosmetic products. Triethanolamine, Lab Grade, 85% is a solution of pure Triethanolamine with 15% contents of water. Lab grade chemicals possess reasonable purity but do not comply with any official standard for quality or purity. Lab Alley’s Triethanolamine, Lab Grade, 85% is ideal for educational/research purposes and related commercial application.
Triethanolamine Uses
Triethanolamine is an amine produced by reacting ethylene oxide (considered highly toxic) with ammonia (another known toxin). It is used as a buffering agent, masking and fragrance ingredient, and surfactant, in addition to its primary use as a pH adjuster. Triethanolamine is a coating ingredient for fresh fruit and vegetables. It is used in surfactants and as a dispersing ingredient and detergent in hand and body lotions, shaving creams, soaps, shampoos, and bath powders. Triethanolamine (TEA) belongs to the family of ethanolamine. It includes the properties of both amines and alcohols. Addition of TEA to an acidic buffer facilitates the determination of fluoride in inorganic orthophosphates by using a fluoride-selective electrode. Triethanolamine (TEA) has been used as a component of the acetylation working solution, in the preparation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogels and as a constituent of CO2/O2 specificity (SC/O) assay buffer.
