MacConkey Agar is a selective and differential medium used for the isolation and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae and other Gram-negative bacteria in water, dairy products, sanitary materials, and clinical specimens. The inclusion of bile salts and crystal violet inhibits Gram-positive bacteria. Lactose fermenters produce reddish-pink colonies, while non-fermenters form colorless or transparent colonies.
