About Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium Hypochlorite has the formula NaOCl, and as the hydrate is a pale green solid with the formula NaOCl.5H2O. It is also known as sodium chlorate(I). It is an ionic compound that contains the hypochlorite ion (chlorate(I)), -OCl.

The pentahydrate salt is stable, but the anhydrous (without water) solid is unstable and is potentially explosive. Despite the existence of these solids, by far the most common presentation of Sodium Hypochlorite is as a pale green dilute solution known as bleach.

Sodium Hypochlorite solution can be used for disinfecting (via sprays and wipes), pressure-washing, pool and water treatment (the chlorination of water), cleaning wood, concrete and other hard surfaces, and for use in laboratories, hospitals and in dentistry.
