About Glycerin

Those three OH groups make it a polyol, and they're what let it grab onto water molecules and hold them, which is exactly why it's such a popular humectant in everything from toothpaste to lotion. At room temperature it's a clear, syrupy, nearly odorless liquid with a faintly sweet taste, fully miscible with water and alcohol. It's naturally hygroscopic, so an open container will slowly pull moisture out of the air, and it has a notably high boiling point for something this simple, which is part of why it stays stable in so many finished products.
