About Ethyl Alcohol 190 Proof 95% Undenatured ACS, USP, FCC Grade
There are three widely recognized monograms for chemical purity: ACS, USP, and FCC. This ethanol fulfils requirements for all three. The American Chemical Society (ACS) sets purity standards for over 400 commonly-used reagents via a sub-committee composed of chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers, academics, and government organizations. Similar to USP and FCC monograms, ACS grade designation signifies high purity (at least 95%) and integrity of reagents. The ACS does not verify validity of high purity claims, but relies on suppliers to fulfil the requirements of the ACS monogram in their own self-interest. The ACS presents “classical methods of analysis,” by which a manufacturer or third party can verify reagent purity, including assays, titrations, colorimetry tests, and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The ACS monogram for ethyl alcohol specifies physical constants, as well as typical appearance, phase changes, solubility, and density, and typical applications.
Although it is non-denatured, ACS grade ethanol may still contain up to 5% impurities, and instrumental analysis would reveal a mixture of predominantly ethanol, with some water and trace organic impurities. As such, ACS grade is suitable for general lab purposes, not including high-precision experiments like HPLC or synthesis. Applications specified in the ACS monogram include extraction medium, chromatography solvent, preparation of indicator solutions. In practice the applications for this product are much more diverse, particularly because this ethanol also qualifies for USP and FCC grade designations, which means it meets the requirements for food and pharmaceutical use. It may be used as a food additive or processing aid, a solvent for pharmaceuticals, a sanitizing agent, or an additive for cosmetics or oral hygiene aids, to name a few.
